Building portable seismometers to detect earthquakes and tremors

2022 STEM Scholar
Fredericksburg, VA Thornburg Middle School

Marie’s Big Idea:

Marie’s students were curious about tremors and earthquakes. They decided to build their own seismometers. Students conducted research on seismometers big and small. They used their findings to plan, build, and test portable seismometers using electromagnets that can detect even the smallest tremor.

Interesting Facts:

Marie loves developing gluten-free versions of old recipes so that she can safely eat them.

In her own words: “I'm a middle school gifted resource and science teacher who loves to push and encourage my students to reach the next level of their thinking, problem solving, and question asking.”
