Erin Elliott

Created an aquaculture system to learn about the local ecosystem and potential careers that combine life sciences and agriculture

2020 STEM Scholar
Panama City Beach, FL Surfside Middle School

Erin’s big idea: Erin showed her students the relationship between living things and the unique fields in life sciences by building a greenhouse with an aquaculture/hydroponics system. Students took what they learned in class and applied it to the real-world scenario of their local ecosystem. Students also learned about unique ways to use science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in modern agriculture.

Interesting Facts:  Erin has a passion for living things. Before becoming a teacher, Erin spent seven years working as a biologist at zoos and aquariums around the country.

In her own words:“I want to emphasize the relationship between humans and the land that we call home, and hopefully instill in my students a desire to find the balance needed to keep our land healthy but still provide us with the food that we need.”
