Carey Hancey-Shier

Assessing thermal energy using small scale calorimetry

2022 STEM Scholar
Lorton, VA Grace E Metz Middle School

Carey’s Big Idea:

Carey’s built working thermometers then assessed thermal energy using small scale calorimetry” After determining the efficiency of the calorimeter by ascertaining the lowest calorimeter constant, students were challenged to create their own calorimeter with the lowest constant.

Interesting Fact:

Carey was named a 2022 Northrop Grumman Teacher Fellow and received the 2022 Maitland P. Simmons Teaching Award.

In her own words: “Creating projects that engage students in STEM is why I teach middle school research. It is pure joy to see the creativity exuded from these young minds”
