Measured and discovered how something small can have a large impact on the local environment

2020 STEM Scholar
Hopkinsville, KY Christian County Middle School

Amanda’s big idea: Amanda’s students used meters to find how something small can have a large impact on the local environment. After determining and collaborating where to collect water samples, students analyzed and tracked chemicals and contamination. Students also grew aquatic plants and see how sunlight affects oxygen and water.

Interesting facts: Out of all the science fields, Amanda loves astronomy the most! Between her love for the outdoors and space, she plans to one day watch a space launch in-person!

In her own words: “This project would be the centerpiece of my biology unit and would be driven by the Gasper River mass fish killing as an introductory phenomenon.”
